Although our program is only two days long, our program's impact is expressed every day by those of us who embody what it means to be FIERCE. Former and current mentees, Outreach Chairs, mentors, and committee members continue to reaffirm community empowerment long after the program has ended. We'll be featuring some of them on this blog. Our first FIERCE Feature is Angeline Cesar, a senior at Channel Islands High School who attended FIERCE in 2017. What are your plans after high school? Attend a four-year (preferably UCSB) and major in business or sociology and minor in Asian American studies. Describe your FIERCE experience in three words. Informational, welcoming, and fun. What did you learn or take away from FIERCE? I learned to accept who I am and my culture. Most importantly it showed me to share my culture with others rather than hide it.
How have you applied what you learned at FIERCE to your daily life? I have been able to push for a Tagalog class at my high school and start a Filipinx club. I became a new person after FIERCE. Before FIERCE I never really cared about my culture, but now I’m very passionate on showing where I came from with students in my school. I believe it is important for them to know about my culture because it is a popular culture in the community. I also believe culture understanding will eventually end racism. If people had the knowledge about each culture they would understand why they do things the way they do and will respect it. What would you say to someone who's thinking about applying to FIERCE? Please apply! You won’t regret and you have nothing to lose! You’ll gain friends from all over California, mentor, more knowledge of where your family came from and, experience a dorm room! You’re experience can change your views of the future just how it changed mine to help my community be better.
