About F.I.E.R.C.E.
What is F.I.E.R.C.E.?
Filipinxs In Education Reaffirming Community Empowerment, or FIERCE, is a free two-day overnight outreach program made specifically for Southern California Filipinx high school students. FIERCE is held at UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) and is hosted by Kapatirang Pilipino (KP), UCSB's Filipinx-interest club. The two days are filled with a variety of educational workshops, guest speakers, a campus tour, and many other activities that will help the Filipinx high school students realize that a college education is within their grasp.
Not Just Academic!
KP is founded on four pillars: cultural, political, social, and academic. To ensure that all these aspects are covered and that the students receive a well-rounded "KP Experience" FIERCE also offers cultural dance workshops, group discussions, and social activities that will help participants find a common ground and connect with one another.
Overnight Stay
This program involves an overnight stay at one of the Residence Halls at UCSB, where they will be hosted by a UCSB Student. In addition to this, all the meals will be provided, and the students will be dining at UCSB’s dining commons once a day. This will create a new experience entirely by allowing the students to experience college campus life and learn what it feels like to be a UCSB student.
Mentorship Program
The students will be separated into groups and will be assigned mentors who share similar interests as them. These mentors will be in charge of supervising the students all day as well as giving tours, leading group discussions, being available for questions, etc. Our mentorship program fosters bonds between UCSB students and high school students that continue long after the end of the program.
Why Be F.I.E.R.C.E.?
Students should be F.I.E.R.C.E. so that they can take advantage of this incredible program. Students will explore the multitude of post-high school options, become familiar with the college application process, rediscover what it means to be Filipinx American, and develop new friendships. We recommend all students to apply.

Our History |
F.I.E.R.C.E. was an integral part of Kapatirang Pilipino (KP), but was put to rest for several years. In 2014, then-Outreach Chair Eileen Liu was able to reproduce a plan for FIERCE that future Outreach Chairs would pick up and build upon for the next two years. The next year, Outreach Chair Kristen Lim directed and led the first FIERCE program since the hiatus, bringing students from the surrounding Oxnard area to the UCSB campus. In following years, FIERCE expanded its reach, bringing students from as far north as the Bay Area and as far south as San Diego. FIERCE continues to grow, transform, and expand each year thanks to the efforts of KP's Outreach Chairs and their dedicated FIERCE committees.
